A cottage country planting design

These clients had bought a beautiful cottage which they had done up in a lovely contemporary style. Their garden was ‘all to the front’ and encompassed a good- sized car-parking area. The garden was south-facing and very sunny and had a road running along in front of it. The brief was to create a shelterbelt from the wind and screening from the road so the clients could enjoy their garden with some degree of privacy. There was scope in this large garden with generous borders to create both ‘hot’ and ‘cool’ planting schemes. With a long retaining wall running the length of the garden we were able to have plants cascading down the length of the wall and a variety of fruit trees along the wall behind. All the planting was wildlife friendly, encouraging a wide variety of visitors to the garden.
